Its been confirmed that Brent Cowell has retired.
What a great player he has been for the Royals since he came to the West. I have massive respect for him as a footballer and for the way he played for EP.... It is a huge blow for us with Oliver retiring too. We have recruited thank god, which will go a long way to softening these blows a bit.
Cowell was a player who played with courage and heart. Everything I admire in a player. A real shame to see him go. I was hoping he would go around for one more year but that wasnt to be. Good luck to him in the future....
Up the Royals....

Yeh huge loss Gasman, bad luck for the Royals and I think he was a player very much respected and admired by opposition supporters and opponents. He lacked a yard in pace but his skills were silky smooth.

Puts a shed load of pressure on the likes of Wirrpanda and Roe to stay fit for EP in 2010.....losing the likes of Cowell, Oliver, Stratton, Hutchings and Duncan is a huge loss......certainly will test Micales man management skills for 2010....he did a great job in 2009, but now the EP fans and comp as a whole will expect EP to perform like that again.....when you are flying under the radar it is easier to achieve success.....the true test is when you are expected to win and have to deliver the goods.
Whilst it will be great for the likes of EP to keep improving, I've got a feeling EP might do an EF and struggle with the expectation of success......EF came off a big 08 finish only to struggle from mid to late 09.....I wish the EP fans all the best for 2010, because from where I'm looking, I don't think they have the depth to plug all those losses identified above.

No doubt they are big losses. Cowell & Oliver are two of our best I reckon.
Its hard to tell what will transpire until we kick the leather around. I still think we will do OK but may fall into the trap of being inconsistant occasionally. Towards the second half of last year we didnt rely on a few players. Micale got average players to suddenly stand up. It was obvious there was a turning point with many of the wannabees completely changing their ways.
When we were 3 wins & 8 losses Micale drew a line in the sand. Something happened and it was great to see. Hope it continues in 2010.... Still heaps of work to do (Being realistic). Im sure EP are aware of that.

And something to disappoint our Perth friends:
Kane Goodwin transferred from Eftel to South Medibank to wear the black & blue!
Can anyone shed any light on him please?

Only played ressies Macs, didn't see too much of him but maybe he is good mates with Deaves? Was disappointed to see Deaves go, he was close to selection at the time. How's he coming along?

Haven't heard much DD. Not listed as a loss on our Website so that's good. He got injured towards the end of last season and ended up running for the Ressies.
One of our Members posted this info on Goodwin on our Messageboard!
"His Reserves form in 2009 was excellent . . and I gather he wasn't impressed with not being given a League game. In his last 11 games in the ressies, he picked up over 24 possessions in all but one game. 27, 25, 25, 25, 25, 33, 29, 28, 14, 27, 24, 25.
That's a very promising set of figures."
Hopefully he can transfer the same to our League side!

kane played at perth colts in 2008 and played reserves in 2009 being named emg. for league for i think the last 5 games of the year, he has great fitness and would of been one of the fittest at perth. although he has a knack for high disposal games he is known for spraying kicks. all the best to him at east perth.

Hope he gets his chance and grabs it...
I like Deaves... Showed glimpses in the ressies last year, at least the games I saw.

Interesting to hear East Perth have not given up hope of pursuading Brent Cowell to continue. Cowell has stated he needs a break at 30 years of age, but is 3 games shy of life membership...
Would be a massive boost if in fact he did reconsider his decision to retire. If it is body fatigue why not put him on a revised programme ?? Some older players like Cowell who use their bodies like battering rams have got to be managed differently.
He is only 30. Players like him should be able to run around the WAFL well into their mid-thirties. We need to look after them and make sure they stay revived longer... Hope he changes his mind.

Troy Cook is a good example - the bloke is 34 and hits harder than most. Although Cowell is often one to spoil my Saturday arvo, he is a damn good player. EP and the WAFL would be poorer without him, so hopefully he plays on ..(he can rest when EP are fixtured against Perth)

Growler put his body on the line week after week for the Royals and often received very unfair treatment. He never complained but the whistleblowers gave him no protection whatsoever. In fact more often than not he was penalised for being a 100% ball player!

I would pay good money to go and watch Cowell vs Cook in a match up.... Both tough but not fancy footballers. They get the job done with little accolades. My type of footballers.... Cooks value to Perth this year will be huge just with his presence on the ground, which is the same reason it would be great to have Cowell back there this year. Would be a bonus to EP if it happened.
But making a decision to retire is not done lightly. He must have thought long & hard about it. Would be unlikely he would change his mind, but you never know...

Hopefully the thought of 3 more games for Life Membership and playing alongside Wirra for a season might help him change his mind.
But my thoughts are that he would get his Life Membership anyway!
